TJ is preparing for their seventh annual health and safety staff induction event, which will take place throughout January. The training will be delivered virtually – as it has for the past two years due to the pandemic – as this method has proved extremely successful and is favoured by staff.
All employees will watch a general health and safety video covering topics such as working at height, manual handling, asbestos awareness, site PPE requirements, reporting of accidents and near misses.
Following this, lorry drivers, waste transfer station operatives and quarry operatives will all be required to watch a video tailored to their job role and the specific hazards they might face during their day to day operations. For example, lorry drivers will be given information on updated tachograph laws, quarry operatives will be updated on the importance of machinery guarding and waste transfer operatives will be informed about our strict fire watch requirements.
The different elements of the training have been recorded in sections so that each employee can access just those that are relevant to them. The videos will be available throughout January so that staff can access and watch them at a time to suit them, but all training must be completed by the end of the month.
The videos will be accessible via the staff intranet as Microsoft PowerPoint slides. Staff will receive an email with a link to the videos and given time during the working week to undertake the training. When staff log in to the intranet, their own personalised dashboard will appear and the training that is relevant to them will automatically be available.
Supervisors will be able to see who has watched the videos and who hasn’t, which will enable them to ensure everyone is completing their training in full and that safety standards are maintained. These videos are great as they can also be utilised for training new staff as and when they start.
The sessions are being organised by Jack Macfarlane, Head of Compliance and Lee Downer, Fleet Manager and in-house driver CPC trainer.
Jack said:
“The virtual delivery has proved to be very successful as staff can choose to access the content when it suits them. Tailoring the sessions to different employees means that all staff receive training that is relevant to them and that delivery is more concise. The continued delivery of the annual inductions demonstrates TJ’s commitment to health and safety.”
