TJ’s eighth annual health and safety staff inductions, which took place in January, were a great success! The training was delivered face-to-face for the first time since before the pandemic and this format was extremely well received by all.
The emphasis for this year’s inductions was on health, safety and environmental procedures and how we uphold our legal obligations to protect ourselves, each other and the environment. The sessions were organised by Jack Macfarlane, Head of Compliance, and Lee Downer, Fleet Manager and in-house driver CPC trainer.
Our inductions are split into three types depending on which part of the business the employee works in, with one tailored to drivers, one for quarry operatives and one for waste transfer station operatives. Each training session included a video presentation, tailored to the relevant area of the business.
The site operative inductions were delivered to small groups across a number of sites during the first week of January and included topics such as:
The drivers completed their inductions in small groups in the boardroom throughout January, with a 100% completion rate. The driver training was led by Lee Downer and included topics such as:
This year we included footage from real life incidents within the training – some of which were incidents involving our own drivers. The drivers had the opportunity to analyse each incident and consider how it could have been avoided. This section of the training resulted in highly engaged discussions and was positively received by all.
Lee said: “It was great to get back in the room with staff after a few years of delivering this training virtually! We had a 100% completion rate and all the feedback we received was extremely positive. Our aim is to deliver annual industry-relevant training to the entire staff body and the fact that this year’s training resulted in high levels of engagement was fantastic.”
