I enjoy working for the TJ Group knowing that I am part of a management team that works hard to ensure all of our employees return home from work each day safely
Jack MacFarlane, Head of Compliance
I graduated from the University of Portsmouth in 2018 with first class honours in Law and was awarded the Business School Certificate in Professional Practice. During my time as a student, I was a national quarterfinalist in the Aspiring Solicitors competition. Head of Business & Statistics for the University of Portsmouth Electric Race Car team, becoming world champions in the Class 2 category and achieving bronze in Class 1 at the International Formula Student Competition. And I was an active member of the University’s General Legal Advice Clinic during my final year of study.
I joined TJ’s in 2017 as an intern as part of a placement year within my Law degree, initially working as a Management Trainee and have since progressed to a department manager. Prior to my employment at TJ’s I completed a six month internship at Interserve Facilities Management as a data analyst, after working as a customer delivery driver for Tesco’s during my years studying at College. After leaving school I was an apprentice Footballer at Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, where I enjoyed playing football every day with my fellow apprentices chasing the dream to become a professional footballer.
Head of Compliance
As Head of Compliance, I manage the fleet team who ensure that TJ’s comply with our operator’s licence and our fleet of 100 plus HGVs our maintained to road safety standards. Whilst continuing to manage health & safety by carrying out regular site audits, workplace accident & near miss investigations, producing risk assessments, policies & procedures and delivering in-house training through physical and digital platforms on a regular basis. And as a qualified Technically Competent Manager (TCM) I ensure TJ’s diverse portfolio of waste management sites remain compliant with our environmental permits, ensuring we comply with our waste duty of care obligations and aid the Environment Agency during audits and inspections
My favourite part of my job is spending time at our quarries and waste transfer stations, interacting with our site employees and drivers who work hard each day and continue to deliver excellent service. I enjoy working for the TJ Group knowing that I am part of a management team that works hard to ensure all of our employees return home from work each day safely.
My strengths are my ability to time manage and organise workloads to ensure that my team keeps a fleet of 100 plus HGV’s safe and roadworthy.
I have worked for TJ’s since February 2017, initially joining the business as an intern on a placement year as part of my Law degree, and have now progressed through the business to a department manager.
Outside of work I enjoy keeping fit and healthy. I go running a few times a week with my uncle in Southsea, and always take part in the annual Great South Run and Portsmouth Half Marathon which is sponsored by TJ Waste. Unfortunately, covid has put a stop to obstacle races in recent years so I am looking forward to getting back into them when its safe to do so. The Active Warrior 10k is a favourite of mine in Southampton, another event sponsored by TJ Waste!
I am a V4 climber and love bouldering (which is a form of indoor climbing) with my friends at Red Spider Climbing Centre in Fareham. I am very much a seasonal outdoor climber; I save that for the warmer days!
Born and raised in Portsmouth I am a Portsmouth Football Club fan. I try and go to Fratton Park as much as possible with my dad and brother-in-law. I’ve been lucky enough to see us win the FA Cup in 2008 against Cardiff City at Wembley, the EFL Trophy on penalties against Sunderland in 2019 and League 2 title on the last day of the season in 2017.
