Our quarries
TJ Transport also owns two quarries; a sand and gravel quarry at Hythe, Southampton, and a chalk quarry at Butser near Petersfield.
Butser Quarry
We purchased Butser Quarry in 2017 following a search for sites in Hampshire that would enable us to supply our own aggregates to our clients. At Butser, we quarry rock chalk, the strongest naturally-occuring material in Hampshire.
We utilise it in several forms – as crushed chalk, ‘as dug’ chalk, gabion rock chalk and agglime chalk. The most popular type is the crushed chalk, which is also referred to as 6F5 rock chalk, a primary general fill aggregate. It’s most commonly used for capping, laid over terram to raise and level natural ground ready for a Type 1 sub base.
Butser is also the location of our recycled aggregate production. We welcome deposits of rubble – including hardcore, concrete, bricks and asphalt – from the commercial sector, which we use to make our own recycled bulk fill aggregate, iBlend. Rubble tipping is free of charge – simply bring your hardcore waste along to Butser Quarry (GU31 5SP). We’re open 8am–5pm Mon to Fri and you must hold a waste carrier’s licence and wear PPE to unload.
Hythe Quarry
Planning permission for mineral extraction and restoration at Hythe Quarry was granted in March 2017 and quarrying commenced in August 2018. The quarry is split into three phases and is planned to be completed by 2028.
The golden gravel and sharp sand mixture is ideal for onward screening/washing, bedding and drainage fill. The sand, which is available in much larger volumes than the gravel, is suitable for many purposes including for building materials such as plaster, cattle bedding, sports surfacing and utilities.
Our values
Our values are themes that we’ve embedded throughout our services to ensure an equal and exceptional experience is provided to all our customers, every time. Our core values include:
Great service, right price
We deliver services and products that exceed expectations, combined with good value for money – we continually price check to ensure our prices are competitive.
Prioritising customer service
Customer service has always been a top priority for us. We believe that ensuring a first-class service is delivered each and every time is what brings our customers back to us.
Communication
We keep in touch with our customers every step of the way, so you’re well informed at all times.
Well maintained fleet
Our vehicles are our crowning glory and we take great care in ensuring every aspect of our fleet is immaculate. We run a continuous renewal scheme and our drivers conduct daily checks to ensure safety.
Quality provision
Everything we do is driven by quality, from the customer service we provide and the vehicles we use, to the aggregates we supply and the jobs we complete on your behalf.
Safety first
We take health and safety very seriously and we have a dedicated compliance department to ensure safety standards are met.
Environmental awareness
As part of our duty of care, it is our intention to reduce our carbon footprint by signing up to a carbon credit scheme to offset our usage. It is likely that we will enter into a commitment to plant a tree for every 100 tonnes of aggregate we sell.
Dedicated to diverting waste from landfill
We’ve made it one of our core missions to divert as much waste as possible from landfill. TJ Waste continually seeks out new routes for waste disposal, whether that’s innovative avenues for recycling, new processes or other options for Energy from Waste. TJ Transport always endeavours to repurpose and reuse as many unwanted materials as possible including inert soil, contaminated materials (which are treated and reused) and rubble.
Using technology to decrease our carbon footprint
Our customised IT system, Fissara Move, can be utilised on the move, via Samsung Galaxy tablet devices, which has improved communication between our drivers and office staff. This improved two-way communication has enabled us to lower our carbon emissions as office staff are able to route our drivers more accurately, resulting in fewer wasted miles.
Efficient fleet
Our entire fleet is on a rolling renewal scheme, which means our vehicles are always modern and well-maintained. It’s a fact that newer vehicles are more efficient and produce lower emissions; this is something that we take seriously and that we’re very mindful of.
Electric cars
We’ve launched an initiative to provide electric company cars for key members of staff in a bid to ensure internal travel is being done in the most eco-friendly way possible. So far we have equipped three employees with cars; these staff members are in roles that require them to travel between sites as well as visiting clients during the working day. By cutting out fossil fuels for regular travel, we hope to significantly reduce our company carbon footprint.
Corporate Social Responsibility
As a company, we like to give a little something back to the local community. In recent years we’ve provided a range of support including:
- Regular fundraising events at our head office throughout the year. These include Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, Jeans for Genes Day and Dress Down Fridays, which have raised hundreds of pounds for a range of charities.
- A donation to a crowdfunding project set up to support creatives in the Portsmouth area who experienced hard times since the onset of the pandemic. The project was set up by Portsmouth Creates, a community interest company that supports artists and creatives in the Portsmouth area. The project made it possible to provide £500 micro-commissions to 20 creatives.
- Donating a number of hampers to homeless shelters in Portsmouth to provide a bit of festive cheer and give a little something back.
